Content creators share their Soweto Derby experiences online, capturing the humour, rivalry and unforgettable atmosphere that surrounds South Africa’s biggest football showdown.

Soweto, South Africa (06 March 2026) – There are some sporting moments that bring South Africans together (or lovingly divide them), and the Soweto Derby is one of them. When the country’s two most supported clubs, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, meet, the rivalry spills far beyond the pitch. It goes into the stands, onto social media and into the stories fans share long after the final whistle.

In the most recent encounter, the Pirates walked away with a convincing 3–0 victory, a result that had supporters celebrating, commiserating and, of course, creating plenty of memorable moments online.

Among those soaking up the atmosphere was radio personality and content creator Mitch Matyana, who documented the derby experience in his usual entertaining style. Known for his sports commentary and humorous takes on everyday situations, Mitch shared snippets of the energy inside the stadium as fans from both sides made their voices heard.

Content creator Rory Petzer also joined the derby crowd, ticking off a major item on his sporting bucket list. The die-hard Chiefs supporter attended the Derby and, while the result may not have gone the way he hoped, the experience itself seemed to live up to expectations.

Professional footballer Mike Morton also shared a light-hearted glimpse of the day through a photo posted on social media. The image perfectly captured the rollercoaster of emotions that come with derby football. A Pirates supporter laughed in the foreground while, in the background, former Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune appeared to point in protest.

Moments like these are part of what makes the Soweto Derby special. Beyond the scoreline, the fixture continues to deliver unforgettable scenes. From passionate celebrations to friendly rivalry. Reminding us why it remains one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting events.
