Making a splash in Singapore. Team South Africa keeps building momentum on Day 3 of the World Aquatics Championships.

Singapore (29 July 2025) – The action continues at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, and Team South Africa is showing no signs of slowing down. South African swimmers came to deliver their ultimate best at the 22nd edition of the championship.

After a strong opening two days in the pool, not forgetting Pieter Coetzé’s qualification for the 100m backstroke final, which is set for 13:56 (CAT) today. A 1500m swim from Catherine van Rensburg, and a committed 200m freestyle effort by Matthew Sates, Day 3 has kicked off with even more reasons to keep on cheering.

Aimee Canny is turning heads in the women’s 200m freestyle! The 19-year-old blazed through her morning heat, finishing third in Heat 3 with a brilliant time of 1:57.53. That performance placed her 8th overall, securing a spot in the semi-finals and earning her a spot among the top 10 globally. An exciting moment for the rising star and Team SA fans back home.

And she is not the only one making waves this morning.

Chris Smith brought the heat in the men’s 50m backstroke, winning Heat 9 with a powerful time of 26.82 seconds. That effort placed him 6th overall, comfortably booking his place in the semi-finals. With that kind of speed, all eyes will be on him as the competition intensifies later today when the swimmers fight for a spot in the final.

Meanwhile, it was not just swimmers making their mark. Diving duo, Zalika Methula and Bailey Heydra impressed in the Women’s 3m Synchronised Springboard prelims and placed 12th of out 23 elite teams. While it was not enough to advance, their performance showed promise. Who knows? This could be the launchpad of their Synchronised Springboard careers.

Team South Africa is proudly flying the flag high in Singapore. With more races and routines ahead, the energy in the water and the support from back home continues to flow strongly.
