Movember isn’t only about moustaches, it’s about sparking conversations, checking in on your mental and physical health and showing up for yourself and those around you.
South Africa (18 November 2025) – Movember may be all about moustaches, but it’s really about sparking conversations on the men’s health issues that often go unnoticed, prostate and testicular cancer, mental health struggles, and the pressure to appear “fine” even when things are not okay. These are not just abstract ideas for mountain biker Phillip Buys, but priorities he lives by every day.
“Cycling is all about balance. And that balance has to include your health. Physical, mental, and everything in between.”
Exercise has a remarkable effect on both body and mind. Anyone who’s come back from a long ride feeling lighter, clearer, and calmer knows the feeling, and science backs it up.
Philip stresses that cycling adds extra benefits! Time outdoors, sunlight, and a steady rhythm that resets the mind. Getting out on your bike does more than keep you fit, it clears your head and lifts your mood. Long rides can leave you feeling calmer, lighter, and more focused.
Some people worry that long hours on a bike might harm men’s reproductive health, but how you ride is what really matters.
“It’s not about the hours you spend cycling; it’s about posture, pressure, and equipment.”
Ignoring discomfort is not smart. It can cause problems like tingling or numbness in the area between your sitting bones and genitals. Simple fixes help a lot. Using a cut-out or “no nose” saddle, keeping your handlebars level or slightly higher than the saddle, standing up on the pedals for part of the ride, and stretching before and after.
Even if you ride safely, men should still keep up with regular health checks. Prostate and testicular health should never be ignored.
“The earlier you detect something, the better your chances. You’d service your bike before a big race so why not do the same for your body?”
Cycling is not just about fitness, it’s about connection. Riding with others creates a sense of community and support.
“There’s a community that forms when you ride with others. We motivate each other, and that’s something every guy needs, to know he’s not alone.”
Movember is about starting these conversations, taking care of yourself, and looking out for others.
