You might not understand every word, but a viral video shows how Xhosa rugby commentators pull fans back to the screen, no matter what they’re doing.

South Africa (19 December 2025) – You don’t even need to understand a word of isiXhosa to know that something exciting is happening in rugby.

South African rugby fans have long known that Xhosa commentators bring a level of excitement that can sometimes outshine the match itself. The passion and the rising volume at just the right moment. It’s storytelling, theatre and sport rolled into one. And it turns out that excitement travels far beyond South Africa’s borders.

South Sudanese international and Major League Rugby player Monate Akuei recently joined the conversation with a video that perfectly captures the experience.

In the clip, Monate is busy doing laundry when the energy of Xhosa rugby commentary suddenly fills the room. Without hesitation, he abandons his chores and sprints to the screen. South Africans know that feeling all too well. Even if you’re half-asleep, mid-task or not following the game closely, once those voices rise, you’re locked in!

One comment summed it up perfectly:

“Do I understand Xhosa? Nope. Do I randomly switch to Xhosa commentators just to listen? I love the vibe.”

Whether it’s a try being scored or just the build-up to one, the excitement is contagious, so much so that even professional players across the world can’t help but tune in.
