50 youngsters from Langa were recently treated to free skateboarding lessons in an effort to empower the youth through recreational opportunities (and learn a few cool, new tricks along the way).
Langa, South Africa (16 February 2025) — Fifty young people were treated to a free skateboarding lessons in Langa in what could become formalised sessions that benefit the youth!
Among the teachers was South African Olympic skateboarder Dallas Oberholzer, who has long been on a mission to give rural and vulnerable youth the opportunity to explore and fall in love with the sport.
A concept driven by Dallas’s The Indigo Movement (which creates safe spaces for youth-at-risk through afterschool programmes involving skateboarding) and Outlangish, young skaters who attended the initial session enjoyed a thrilling follow-up day where they got to navigate the City Bowl Park (a facility built to Olympic specifications) like pros-in-the-making.
The City of Cape Town shared that the initial session sessions revealed a “demand for structured skateboarding sessions in the area,” and that these workshops are “paving the way for a potential formalised programme that will continue to empower and engage young people through sport.”
With the Recreation and Parks team on board and with funding from Ward 51, the session was a hit.
Shared Mayco Member for Community Services and Health Francine Hingham:
“It’s inspiring to see how sport and recreation programmes can bring people together and open doors for the future.”
Adds Ward Councillor Lwazi Pakade:
“Providing recreational opportunities for our youth is a key priority. This initiative not only promotes an active lifestyle, but also offers young people a chance to develop confidence, discipline and new skills. I look forward to seeing this programme grow and having even more young skaters from Langa involved.”
