Spring is in the air, and it’s time to get the Mother City sparkling! Residents are encouraged to join the #SpringCleanCT movement and help keep Cape Town clean by picking up litter in their local streets, parks, waterways, and beaches.
Cape Town, South Africa (04 September 2026) – A clean city is everyone’s responsibility, and in the spirit of spring cleaning, Capetonians are being encouraged to play their part in caring for the Mother City.
As part of the newly launched Spring Clean Cape Town 2026 campaign, the City will expand cleaning operations metro-wide as it heads into the busy festive season.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is also calling on the public to get involved by organising or joining local spring cleans in their communities.
The anti-litter mascot Bingo will be touring schools, malls, intersections and other public spaces to remind Capetonians to always “Bin it in the Bingo bin”. Modelled on the City’s green litter bins, Bingo represents the several thousand bins found across Cape Town.
Hill-Lewis said it has been a joy to drive these annual spring clean campaigns alongside so many committed Capetonians.
“For this term of office, we pledged to strive for a cleaner city we all take pride in, where we pick up litter, clean up communities, and do not sit by and watch our environment decline due to pollution,” he said.
“This supports our broader City efforts to expand waste services, with better waste services in informal communities, dozens of new waste traps on all our rivers, a new highway and CBD cleaning unit, and a vlei clean-up programme that is delivering real progress. We call on the public to get involved in #SpringCleanCT 2026: let’s show our civic pride by getting our communities, parks, streets, waterways, and beaches looking sparkling clean this spring,” said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
The annual spring clean campaigns have led to around 200,000 additional bags of litter being cleared each year across Cape Town, thanks to the collective efforts of Capetonians, the City, civil society, schools, and businesses. The achievement speaks volumes about the impact of community involvement, not only in driving the campaign, but also in clearing waste that might otherwise go uncollected or take far longer to remove.
This year, residents are being challenged to help break previous records and clean the city like never before.
Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Twigg, further assured residents that the City would scale up area cleaning operations ahead of the busy tourism season.
Residents can also report illegal dumping tip-offs through the City’s 24-hour toll-free number, 0800 110077, with rewards on offer where information leads to arrests.
