St Mary’s DSG comes home from Spain with a Winners Medal and two podium finishes, after their Tour Choir took on the Golden Voices of Barcelona competition!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (23 July 2026) – It has been a tremendously successful month for South African choirs!
Last week, we told you how St Cyprian’s School in Cape Town swept the Golden Voices of Barcelona competition, bringing home the Grand Prix after a performance in the sacred Crypt of the Sagrada Família.
This week, we received news that St Mary’s DSG has landed its own podium finishes at the same event. The school’s Tour Choir, 51 girls and 5 staff strong, took to the stage in Lloret de Mar last week and left with 1st Place in the Folklore Category, complete with the Winners Medal, and a hard-earned 2nd Place in the Sacred Category.

“Our history of success with our choirs has been exceptional, and I want to say to our 51 girls and 5 staff, thank you for representing both our school and South Africa with such excellence, passion, and pride,” says Head of Music and Choir Conductor, Lindy van der Meulen. “Your hard work, dedication, and love of music have truly paid off, and these results are a wonderful reflection of your talent and commitment.”
St Mary’s DSG choristers are world-renowned. With World Champion crowns in Scenic Folklore at the 2018 World Choir Games in Tshwane, as well as Gold and Silver medals from the 2023 World Choir Games in South Korea.
The Golden Voices of Barcelona adds to their impressive tally. The international competition draws young choirs from across the globe to perform, compete, and connect across cultures against the backdrop of Spain’s Costa Brava.
Congratulations to the St Mary’s DSG Tour Choir. Your win is more proof that when South African girls sing, they rise straight to the top!
