KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (12 May 2026) – We got goosebumps watching Siyabonga Khumalo receive a standing ovation from his fellow graduates, academics and guests when he walked across the stage at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville Campus Sports Centre last week!
The 21-year-old has just graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree summa cum laude (a Latin term which means ‘with the highest praise’) awarded to graduates who achieve exceptional academic results.
“Refusing to let disability define his future, Siyabonga Khumalo, a person of short stature (with dwarfism), has graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with 21 distinctions, 14 Certificates of Merit, and six Dean’s Commendations.” shared the UKZN.

Siyabonga was born with dwarfism and scoliosis, but his disability has never held him back. He’s always upheld a life-long curiosity, passion for learning, and a belief in his own ability to succeed. He completed his schooling at Sarel Cilliers High School, where he was named the 2022 Dux Scholar!
“When I got to university, I kept that same mindset,” he said as per UKZN. “I told myself that a real distinction meant 80% and above, even though the official mark is lower. I wanted to push beyond the standard and challenge myself.”

South Africa, We Have SO Much Good News to Share With You!He majored in two fields tied to his passion for people – Anthropology and Psychology. At the university, he has been involved in student organisations, won numerous awards, and used his platform to challenge stereotypes and champion inclusivity.
He dedicated his graduation to his proud mom, whose sacrifices made his degree possible.
“For her, this degree is as much hers as it is mine,” he said.
Siyabonga is currently pursuing his honours degree, with plans to complete his master’s and earn his PhD before turning 40, to ultimately become a clinical psychologist.
He is one of 153 students with disabilities who graduated from UKZN this Autumn! Halala to each and every one of them.
