The world’s most famous escape artists may be living life in the slow lane, but Stoffel and Hammie are enjoying their golden years together.

Hoedspruit, Limpopo (16 July 2026) – South Africa’s most famous honey badgers are still going strong. Stoffel and Hammie may be well into their geriatric years now, but the legendary duo are still living their best lives under the dedicated care of the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

“Hammie and Stoffel are still doing really well here at the centre, at the respective ages of 21 (Hammie) and 29 (Stoffel) they are certainly classified as geriatric residents.” shares Moholoholo. “This means they receive more intensive care with increased monitoring, frequent habitat adaptations due to weather changes and ensuring they are on the correct supplements and diet for their needs and age.”

While their days of plotting daring breakouts are largely behind them, they’re receiving plenty of extra attention to make sure they stay happy and comfortable.

These partners in crime need no introduction because they’re world famous! A whole BBC documentary was made about Stoffel the escapist, who repeatedly outsmarted every one of his ‘escape-proof’ enclosures, often with Hammie right by his side. He did this dozens of times, by any means possible. Sometimes he’d even escape into the lion enclosure next door, where he’d brazenly pick fights.

His escape antics have settled, but visitors at Moholoholo are still just as charmed by the legend.

“I met Stoffel last week, he’s everthing I expected and more. Still full of energy and very entertaining,” shared Daniel McGee after a recent visit.

Others are convinced the pair will simply keep going forever.

“The Chuck Norris of the animal kingdom… they will outlive us all,” joked Linda Gomes Otto.
