Dams in the Western Cape have had much-needed rain, but parts of the Eastern Cape are still facing serious droughts, so a group is sending them tonnes of water
Cape Town, South Africa (20 August 2018) – The South African Water Warriors are a registered non-profit organisation based in Cape Town. What started as a way to get drinking water to the Western Cape has now turned into a national project to help everyone in need.
The sole purpose of it is to collect donations from the general public and big business through volunteer donation stations and distribute it to areas affected by the severe drought.
The group has been fortunate to have had both water and transport donated but now require additional funds to transport to towns further away that are in desperate need of assistance.
“Where there is water there is life. Where there is life there’s growth.”
By way of a crowdfund on BackaBuddy, the Warriors have raised nearly R40,000 towards expenses for transportation costs and additional supplies.
The Kouga Dam is nearly empty, and reports from the Warriors have stated now they only get thick muddy water through the taps. Two Eastern Cape towns in dire need are being assisted thanks to the NPO stepping up to help.
“Yesterday I saw an elderly lady that was walking with 2 x 5l cans of water. It looked like the water that comes from my washing machine after washing has been done. I wanted to stop and take a photo but could not get it over my heart. I would not even give that water to my dogs to drink but these folks have no choice. Help us to help these communities.” – Deon Smit
Deon has played a vital role in getting help to these parts of the country. This week two trucks from Kimberly and Joburg will be setting off for Patensie with even more bottles.
“Earlier this week I sent a call out to SANBWA (South African Bottled Water Association) to ask them if they can see if any of their members would be willing to donate some water for Hankey and Patensie. Within 2 hours of my request Christian von Palace – Lavie du Luc) got back to me and donated 32 pallets This is the water we will be loaded later today. Thank you to Charlotte Metcalf (SANBWA) and Christian. This will go a long way in helping these communities. Hopefully, others will follow.” – Deon Smit
