With big hearts and their sleeves rolled up, young people across the Western Cape are leading the charge to boost vital blood stocks this week!
Cape Town, South Africa (28 July 2026) – We’ll always champion and celebrate young people playing their part to make a positive difference in our country, and this week is no exception.
In fact, it’s officially the ‘Week of Warriors’: a wonderful Western Cape Blood Service initiative where youth across the province are helping to grow the donor base by 1,500 new young donors this financial year, all while easing the ongoing winter pressure on blood stocks.
Winter in the Western Cape naturally brings a dip in blood reserves due to cold weather, winter illnesses like flu, and exam/holiday schedules. From 27 July to 31 July 2026, schools are rising to address this seasonal pressure on blood stocks by hosting blood donation drives and encouraging a culture of giving among young people.
Currently, top blood-donating high schools in the Western Cape are acting as localised donation hubs during the designated week, with WCBS setting up mobile donation clinics directly on school grounds.
Student representative committees and trained WCBS Blood Donor Ambassadors are further leading the effort by raising awareness among their peers by raising awareness, running pledge drives, and encouraging eligible classmates to roll up their sleeves and share the gift of life.
“Young donors are the future of blood donation,” shares Marike Carli.
“If we want to secure a stable blood supply for years to come, we need to invest in growing our youth donor base now. These learners are showing incredible leadership by choosing to give back to their communities and help save lives.”

- Knysna High School
- Buren High School
Each school will host its own on-site blood donation clinic during the campaign week.
