White River Community Refuse to Let Burnt Restaurant's Heart Go Out

When Picasso’s Mexican Taqueria succumbed to the flames of the most devastating fire, the people of White River stood up, displayed true empathy and dug deep to support the dedicated staff whose lives had been turned upside down through no fault of their own.

White River, South Africa (01 December 2025) – A lively restaurant, which had been part of White River’s story and culture for more than a decade, where visitors came from far to break bread and where friends met to celebrate, was tragically burned down to ashes on the fateful night of 24 November.

A devastating fire tore through Picasso’s Mexican Taqueria, leaving nothing but ash and heartbreak behind.

The establishment began as the dream of John and Lyn Davis in 2014 and quickly became one of White River’s favourite gathering places. It was more than a restaurant. Its colour, its warmth, and its energy became part of White River’s identity.

Now, what was meant to be a new chapter for new owners Brian Springorum and Garth Snyman is no more. They, together with their dedicated staff, have been left to process the shock and immense loss. Many of them have relied on daily tips to support their families. With the restaurant destroyed, much of their income has disappeared instantly and completely.

However, in the face of it all, the community has rallied behind them in the most touching display of unity and compassion. A crowdfunding campaign was launched a week ago to help them weather this challenging storm.

In a matter of days, floods of heartwarming messages and over R154,900 have been raised by the people of White River for the servers, kitchen staff, cleaners, and bar team who greeted everyone with smiles and kept this beloved place running.

In an official statement, co-owners Brian Springorum and Garth Snyman said the cause of the fire was unknown, confirmed that no one was hurt and expressed their gratitude to the community for standing by them.

“In the midst of this very difficult moment, we have been deeply moved by the incredible support from our community. Your messages, kindness, and encouragement have brought us so much strength and comfort.”

Speaking to Good Things Guy, Garth’s girlfriend, Verena Wagner, emphasised that they had all been immensely touched by the love and support from everyone during this hard time.

“The whole community has been shaken, and it’s been amazing and overwhelming to see how much impact both Garth and Picasso’s staff and team have in this Lowveld community. Garth and Brian have been incredibly strong, and I believe it’s all because of the unbelievable love and support shown by the community. What no one sees (but me) is the tears of joy he sheds when he reads all the messages.

“It’s really restored my faith in humanity and made me incredibly grateful for life, community and a place we call home,” Verena shares.

The flames may have consumed a building, but the extraordinary outpouring of kindness and financial support has proven that the true foundation of the beloved restaurant, the people, remains protected by the heart of the community.
