The South African natural bodybuilder has gone from battling obesity to making history as the first South African to win the Natural Universe Open title.
Johannesburg, South Africa (20 September 2026) – There are probably very few people who can say they became Mr Universe after making one of the biggest decisions of their career with just one minute to spare.
For Xola Magwaza, that is a reality. The 38-year-old South African natural bodybuilder made history at the INBA/PNBA Natural Universe in Singapore earlier this month, becoming the first South African to win the Open Natural Universe title.
And perhaps the funniest part of the story was that Magwaza only decided to enter the Open men’s physique category at 5:59 pm the day before.
“I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m here. I’m already doing three other classes. Let’s go for it,” he recalled.
Magwaza returned home with three gold medals from four categories, including the overall men’s physique title and a professional card. Yet when his name was called, his first reaction was less “I am the greatest” and more “Do I really look that good?”
“I was just shocked. I’m like, what? You’re telling me I beat all these guys?”
The achievement only became more significant afterwards, when Magwaza discovered he had become the first South African to win the prestigious Open title.

For someone who once struggled with obesity and was going through one of the lowest periods of his life, the moment carried an even deeper meaning.
Magwaza was dealing with depression, financial pressure after his salary was slashed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the challenges of adjusting to life with a young family.
Standing on the stage in Singapore, he found himself reflecting on just how far he had come.
“You’ve gone through so much. You’ve been through a lot, and now you’re here. Thank you for not giving up.”
His transformation has been built on plenty of discipline. This is including an extraordinary 499-day stretch without a cheat meal.
What began as a Lenten sacrifice evolved into a personal challenge, with Magwaza continually moving the goalposts. Forty days became 50, then 100, 150, 200, 300 and eventually a full year.
He eventually stopped at 499 days, and the reason was wonderfully ordinary: wedding cake tasting.
“I can’t even go to 500,” he joked, explaining that his wife insisted he could not miss the tasting.
Beyond the medals, however, Magwaza hopes his journey can show others that transformation is possible, regardless of where they start.
Having competed at the Natural Olympia and now holding professional cards from two of the sport’s biggest stages, he is considering a return to the World Championships.
“If I were to win there, that would complete the trifecta of natural bodybuilding.”
For now, the historic Singapore victory is another chapter in a journey that began long before the lights of an international bodybuilding stage.
“I overcame a lot. You can do it, and here’s how I can help you.”
From one minute before a competition deadline to standing on top of the Natural Universe.
