They weren’t going to wait for adults to get involved, and Kommetjie’s Long Beach is better for it!
Western Cape, South Africa (23 June 2026) – More environmental good news for a greener week! Over 60 children in the South Peninsula – locals and the Ocean View Cadets from Vigis Home of Hope – recently teamed up to tackle a growing problem on their local Long Beach in Kommetjie.
“The youth of the South Peninsula have grown tired of waiting for grownups to sort out the growing plastics problem so decided to roll up their sleeves and tackle themselves.” shared the Kommetjie Residents and Ratepayers Association.
The group – aged 6 to 16 – conducted a clean up that saw ‘bags and bags’ of rubbish collected from their local beach.
“A wave of one hundred hands swept along Long Beach picking up large scale rubbish and sifting for finer microplastics.” the association added.
The group was led by 14-year-old eco warrior, Josh Wynne. After the well-coordinated clean-up, Josh and his folk ensured most of the plastic was delivered for recycling. The rest will be used to create impact art!
“Josh and his parents delivered most of the plastic for recycling but Josh also uses the microplastics in his unique art installations that further promote the idea of the damage plastic waste is doing to Africa.”
A local hardware store commended the young eco warriors for their efforts by kindly sponsoring lunch after the clean-up event.
“As the winter winds change, large pieces of plastic land on our beach which are broken down into microplastics over a period of months. These courageous youngsters have shown what a tremendous difference can be made to our beach with the right attitude and effort.” said Kom resident, Frankie Albright, who helped set up the event.
It gives us heaps of hope, seeing the youth take action for the good of our environment and planet!
“The Cadets are very eager to roll up their sleeves when it comes to the environment. Kommetjie is their beach and they want to protect the wildlife that accidentally swallow the plastics or get caught up in it.” said Vasco Vigis, one of the leaders of the Cadets from Vigis Home of Hope.
