The Alexandra teenager will represent the country at the JKS International Para Cup in Brazil, as support is important to help make the journey possible.

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 August 2026) – A few months ago, Kgosi Pule was still figuring out the world of karate. Now, the 18-year-old wheelchair karate athlete has earned the opportunity to represent South Africa on an international stage in Brazil.

Kgosi, who is from Alexandra, Johannesburg, has been selected for the JKS South Africa national team and will compete in the wheelchair division at the 7th JKS International Para Cup in Vitória from 20 to 23 August 2026.

It is a chance to represent his country, challenge perceptions around disability and show other young people that their circumstances do not have to define the limits of their ambitions.

Kgosi lives with cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities, but his determination and commitment have already taken him a long way. In only a few months of training, he progressed from being a beginner to earning a place on the JKS South Africa national team in the wheelchair division.

His coach, Kaylin Smith, has seen firsthand how karate has helped him grow beyond the competition floor.

Through the sport, Kgosi has developed greater confidence and social skills. Karate has also given him a sense of belonging and encouraged him to believe more strongly in his own abilities.

“Karate has become much more than a sport for Kgosi. It has become a pathway to self-confidence, achievement, belonging, and empowerment,” Smith said.

However, turning his selection into an international opportunity will require support.

Due to his disability, Kgosi will need to travel with both his mother and his coach. Smith, who has worked closely with him throughout his training, understands his communication style, routines and learning needs and will provide coaching and support during the competition.

Funds are being raised to assist with travel, accommodation, competition costs and a specialised lightweight competition wheelchair. The wheelchair would not only support Kgosi during the tournament but could also help him participate more independently in the sport for years to come.

His journey is also an important reminder of what can happen when young people are given the opportunity, support and space to pursue their goals.

Supporters who would like to assist or help share Kgosi’s journey are encouraged to contact the JKS South Africa team for more information or email: [email protected]
