Clean Projects Champion Man Using Spare Time to Clean Dumpsite

Thulani Mzolo has been hailed a “champion” for his efforts in keeping his community clean; the dedicated petrol attendant uses his spare time to help Clean Projects beautify Benoni.

Benoni, South Africa (11 April 2023) – Community-led initiative “Clean Projects” recently came onto the Good Things Guy radar after Benoni residents were highlighted for cleaning their town. Now, the initiative is highlighting champions within the community and Thulani Mzolo is one of them.

Jonathan Etherington founded Clean Projects in December 2022 with the mantra that “little things can make a big difference.” Fed up with the overgrown and neglected intersection of Pretoria Road and Fifth Avenue, he rallied a team of over 50 volunteers to take action.

Starting with cutting the grass and creating a water-wise mound of succulent plants, the Clean Projects team soon identified other projects that needed urgent attention. With the support of sponsors, partners, volunteers, and the community, they started planting, painting, cleaning, weeding, and improving the look of the intersection. The impact was so significant that their efforts quickly expanded to over 10km of road and neighbouring parks.

By acknowledging the champions within the community, more people are inspired to join the cause and before long, the town will be cared for by its very own citizens.

Thulani Mzolo started noticing that the area around the Engen where he worked, was being cleaned up by fellow community members. He decided to do his part and on his off day, started cleaning under the bridge on Morris Avenue. This area was riddled with litter and illegal dumping.

Thulani’s employer happened to pass by as he was cleaning and he stopped to see what he was doing. Thulani’s employer Peter was so moved by his efforts, he joined in to make the job go quicker.

This incredibly selfless action is what inspired the Clean Projects team to name Thulani the “Tuesday Champion”, a title awarded to those who go above and beyond to serve the Benoni community.
