The Coronationville had a steri-day for pets this past week and thanks to Greyhound Welfare SA and friends, 141 animals were helped.
South Africa (15 March 2024) – The Greyhound Welfare South Africa team helped sterilise 141 animals in vulnerable communities, as a way to support communities where hidden hunting dogs live. The species is often used for hunting and as seen recently with Oldie Duke, are not treated when injured but left to live with what ails them until they are no longer useful.
“Unfortunately, due to Greyhounds being used for illegal hunting across the country it is very difficult to get to the actual owners as many dogs are kept in no-go hostel situations, especially in Johannesburg. So almost impossible to sterilise greyhounds.” – Dean Bush
The organisation often gets calls regarding dogs and cats in need and thanks to a special grant given by the Battersea Dogs and Cats’ home in the UK, they were able to host a vital sterilisation day.
“We decided to apply for a special grant for a sterilisation initiative to focus on areas where veterinary care and especially sterilisation is not often accessible”
“This past Sunday, we held our second sterilisation day this year in the community of Coronationville, bordering the gang-plagued Westbury as well as Sophiatown, Newlands and Claremont. The City Of Joburg donated the use of the Coronationville community and recreation Hall for the day.”
They managed to sterilise 141 animals, including 67 cats and 74 dogs. With the help of Tale of Tails, the were able to transport animals to and from the community centre for sterilisation.
