Luke, a student with a brilliant future in STEM, was one of only 200 students selected worldwide for a life-changing opportunity at Stanford University. With finances standing as a huge obstacle in the way, countless individuals “dug deep” to aid with contributions, and now this bright mind is set to do some incredibly innovative things out in Cali!
Randburg, South Africa (10 June 2025) – A bright young student with a very promising future in STEM, Luke van Zyl, has caught the attention of Stanford University. So much so that he’s been presented with the incredible opportunity to be a part of the university’s prestigious STEM Fellowship!
Luke is one of 200 students selected worldwide for the once-in-a-lifetime, CV-defining, future-shaping, “I got into Stanford before I even finished school” opportunity.
No doubt a moment of sheer pride for his family; the opportunity did, however, come at a difficult financial time. The scholarship covers only a portion of the total cost – $350 (approximately R6,226.03) – leaving them to raise an additional R10,700 to make the trip possible.
His mother, Murray van Zyl, shared the emotional struggle of trying to make ends meet while Luke dedicated himself to preparing for this chance of a lifetime.
“While Luke’s been pulling 2AMs to prepare for it, I’ve been staring at numbers, trying to make them stretch where they just can’t,” shared, Murray.
But her appeals, especially on a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign, did not fall on deaf ears, but were instead met with generous hearts.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of all those who dug deep to contribute towards Luke’s trip, this young man is now a step closer to taking his next big step in the world of STEM, proving that collective compassion can truly make dreams take flight!
