A young pangolin, now named Faith, was rescued from the clutches of wildlife traffickers thanks to a vigilant community member in Seraleng.

Rustenburg, South Africa (25 July 2025) – A life has been spared from continued suffering thanks to the compassion and quick action of an individual who chose to take action rather than turn away.

In the heart of Seraleng, a kind community member spotted a young pangolin wandering in distress and immediately called the SPCA Rustenburg for help on Wednesday.

According to the animal welfare society, Trainee Inspector Mthunzi Kunene rushed to the scene within 15 minutes, and together with North West conservation bodies, set into motion a chain of care that would save this precious creature’s life.

After having endured unimaginable hardship at the hands of wildlife traffickers, help had finally come this pangolin’s way, now named Faith, and is now receiving expert treatment at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.

“Despite her injuries and exhaustion, Faith’s fighting spirit reminds us why every single rescue matters.

“The illicit wildlife trade is threatening decades of conservation work — but when one animal is saved, it’s a victory for all of us,” SPCA Rustenberg shares.

Faith is now one of three precious pangolins rescued this month alone, following the touching rescue of Shumi, who was found dehydrated, emaciated, and covered in foul-smelling, infected wounds hidden under her scales, as well as Plum, who was recovered from poachers in the nick of time by law enforcement near South Africa’s border with Zimbabwe.

All three are now in safe care and expert hands as they recover from their rough ordeals. Each rescue is a beacon of hope, proving that a single call or act of kindness can transform a story of suffering into one of survival.

This week, a life was saved, and with it, renewed hope for nature’s wildlife.

SPCA Rustenburg thanks the brave community member, Trainee Inspector Kunene, and all who show up and stand up for wildlife.
