South Africa’s women’s rugby team are rewriting history after reaching the knockout stages for the first time, with their coach praising the achievement and fans sparking a call for a new nickname.
York, England (01 September 2025) – The Springbok Women write their names into South African rugby history after qualifying for the knockout stages of the Women’s Rugby World Cup for the very first time. This is a milestone that highlights the rapid growth of the women’s game and the resilience of a team that continues to defy the odds.
Head coach Swys de Bruin could not hide his pride after the victory.
“I am so proud of everyone, this was really a team effort, not only from all here in England, but also our support structures back home, and this performance justifies the belief SA Rugby had in us,” said coach Swys.
“We had a plan on how to beat Italy and credit to my coaches, as it worked to a tee. Our first phase helped us to score some tries, while we also outplayed them in the backs with some delightful tries.”
This achievement means the Springbok Women will now test themselves against the world’s best on the biggest stage, a challenge that underlines just how far the team has come. For years, they have fought for recognition and opportunities. Now, by breaking new ground, they have earned the admiration of fans across South Africa and beyond.

The team returns to Northampton, where they beat Brazil in their pool opener last weekend. Preparations are now underway for their group phase game against France, the other unbeaten team in the pool.
Beyond the results on the field, the team’s historic progress is also sparking a lighter conversation among supporters. Should the women’s side have a distinct nickname of their own?
Currently, they share the “Springbok” name with the men’s team, but many feel it is time they are recognised in their own right. Suggestions range from the playful “Springbokies” to “Gazelles”.
So, as the Springbok Women march into uncharted territory, we will leave it to you: what nickname would you give them?
