Healing happens when compassion and expertise work together for those in need. Operation Healing Hands was part of over 40 life-changing surgeries that have given patients the priceless gifts of restored sight, mobility and relief from severe health challenges.

Pretoria, South Africa (04 September 2025) – Operation Healing Hands (OHH) recently walked alongside over 40 patients whose lives will never be the same thanks to much-needed medical procedures. Each operation was more than a procedure, but a gift of sight, movement, comfort, and relief.

For people who had been living with cloudy vision, cataract surgeries gave them a clear new perspective on life. Patients like Kenani Ndlovu, Elise Tolmay, and Mohau Machete can now see the world with newfound independence. And in the case of Dinah Selwane, a cornea transplant brought the extraordinary gift of restored sight.

Those struggling with joint pain were given a new lease on life with hip and knee replacements. Patients like Jan Vermaak, Marietjie Loots, and Judith Maritz are now able to walk without pain, reclaim their independence, and embrace life with new energy.

July also brought a wave of hope for many young patients at the Club Surgical and Centurion Day Hospital, receiving grommets, tonsillectomies, and adenoidectomies – procedures that have allowed them to breathe easily, hear better, and grow stronger.

OHH also had the privilege of supporting patients who faced serious health challenges like Jinnelee Jansen van Vuuren, who underwent a complex scoliosis corrective surgery, and Corene Myburgh, who received intricate muscle releases and a skin graft.

Other critical patients, Tina Bezuidenhout and Leandra Stander, received treatment for painful conditions affecting their joints and skin.

These are just a few of the many names of lives that were changed by the compassion, expertise and generosity of volunteers, medical professionals, organisations and sponsors that dedicated themselves to restoring their health and hope.

“These moments are why we exist: to restore not just function, but freedom,” OHH said.

Each procedure, performed in July, was part of OHH’s Mandela Month initiative, which carries out Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service in hospital theatres, consulting rooms, and recovery wards across Pretoria.

“Every patient’s story is a testament to resilience and to what’s possible when compassion meets expertise.”
