Cape Town’s cold Atlantic meets Durban’s warm Indian Ocean in a playful roast of what one city has that the other doesn’t have.
South Africa (30 September 2025) – When it comes to South Africa’s coastal cities, the debate over which is better has reached a whole new level, thanks to two well-known comedians, Schalk Bezuidenhout representing Durban and Anton Taylor representing Cape Town. Or as Schalk jokingly called him, “Mr Cape Town”. The banter goes from different oceans, different accents, and even who has better number plates and accents.
On one side, Cape Town boasts its Atlantic waters, and Durban boasts about its warm Indian Ocean. Schalk highlights the benefits of warmer waters, even claiming that Durban waves could boost your immune system. Apparently, the E. coli in the water is more of a good feature because it toughens you.
Anton had his own spin on the water of Cape Town. And even joking about “neuroephedrine”. Which Durbanites do not want to stress themselves with, because they have never heard of it. While both cities have stunning beaches, the experience is undeniably different.
Onto number plates! Cape Town’s black and white plates were praised for their style. It’s said they have a “Woollies” touch to it. Durban’s green plates were sidelined as “cheap-looking.”
Finally, the comedians rounded off the debate with the question of accents.
“What we have in Cape Town, which you do not have in KZN, is nice accents.”
Anton went on to joke about how people from Durban enunciate. “It’s really narrce…”
Whether it’s scenic views of Table Mountain or the golden sands of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, both Cape Town and Durban have their own charms.
