The 2025 Rescue Sport Series opens at UWC, bringing together athletes from leading lifesaving clubs for a season that builds rescue skills, community spirit, and readiness ahead of next year’s World Championships.
Cape Town, South Africa (13 October 2025) – Cape Town is gearing up for an exciting start to the 2025 Rescue Sport Series, with the season’s first pool competition taking place on 18 October at the University of the Western Cape. The event marks the beginning of an eight-part series that brings together lifesaving athletes from across the Western Cape for a mix of competition and skill development.
The UWC’s 50-metre indoor pool will stage this high-energy opener, where competitors will dive. Spectators are encouraged to pack the stands and cheer on South Africa’s top lifesavers as they put their rescue skills to the test.
Among the clubs set to compete are Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club, last season’s overall leader, along with Big Bay, Milnerton, Fish Hoek, and Xstream Aquatics. Organisers are hopeful that even more clubs will join as the series progresses, with each event offering athletes a chance to sharpen their skills and earn valuable points.
With the 2026 World Championships on the horizon, this series serves as both preparation and motivation for those aiming to represent South Africa on the global stage.
The pool competition will include a mix of junior and senior races, with Nippers, senior lifeguards, and Masters all competing in their respective events. This inclusive format allows younger athletes to learn from experienced competitors while fostering a sense of mentorship within the lifesaving community.
Athletes from outside the Western Cape province will also make a splash, using the event as part of their build-up to the prestigious Orange Cup competition in the Netherlands later this year. Among the standout names to watch is National Team captain Kendra du Toit, who overcame a season threatening injury.
More than 100 athletes are expected to compete, many of whom recently participated in the Winter Pool Sprint Series.
Pool rescue events form a vital part of the Rescue Sport Series, complementing the surf competitions held later in the season. Each race mirrors the physical and mental demands of real-life rescues. By mastering control, stamina, and precision in the pool, these athletes strengthen their ability to save lives when it matters most.
