After narrowly surviving shark predation, this resilient feathered spirit pulled through! Thanks to the SANCCOB team, an African penguin dubbed ‘AP080’ gets to enjoy the beautiful, happy ending we all hoped for!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 December 2025) – Following a terrifying encounter with a shark on 7 June, the brave African penguin, lovingly named ‘AP080’, defied the odds, recovered and received its happy ending.

AP080 arrived at SANCCOB Saves Seabirds with major foot and back injuries, along with a damaged preening gland. The rehabilitation team was particularly worried about the seabird’s injuries, as this gland is essential for waterproofing. The outcome was uncertain, and the road to recovery was a long one.

But at SANCCOB, dedication runs deep in every staff member and volunteer, ensuring the defenceless creatures who enter their doors have a fighting chance at survival.

“The work we do at SANCCOB is more than a job. It is emotional, purposeful and deeply important to the survival of the African Penguin,” the marine conservation organisation said.

After several important procedures and steady rehabilitation at the Gqeberha centre, AP080 made a full recovery!

SANCCOB was happy to share that the feathered resilient spirit was released with other African penguins who waddled back to their colony in Simon’s Town, healthy, strong and ready to continue life in the wild.

“We know this species can be saved, and it will take all of us standing together to make it a reality,” SANCCOB continued.

We commend this incredible team for giving AP080 a chance to thrive and for their invaluable work in protecting the majestic birds that grace our coasts.
