SA’s Surfing Momentum Grows at ISA Junior World Champs

Young South African surfers compete against the world’s best in Peru, as the sport continues to grow locally and internationally.

Punta Rocas, Peru (12 December 2025) – South Africa was on full display at the 2025 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, held at the iconic Punta Roca in Peru. South Africa proudly took to the waves where record-breaking conditions are testing the world’s top young surfers.

With waves ranging from 1.5 to 2 metres, the right and left-hand point break challenged surfers from across the globe, including a record 424 participants from 57 countries.

The South African junior team has shown strong focus throughout the competition, putting in early-morning training sessions and embracing the pride of representing the country in their Proteas colours.

Day five of the competition brought non-stop action. Local commentators highlighted some standout performances, including a series of powerful and precise turns that demonstrated the athletes’ top-level skills.

This moment on the world stage also reflects a broader shift, surfing is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports both globally and at home in South Africa. In recent months, South African surfers have been steadily making their presence felt internationally. Just a few weeks ago, the country also sent athletes to the World Para Surfing Championship, where the sport received even more global visibility and support.

Local representation has expanded into leadership roles, such as the recent appointment of South Africans within the World Waveski Surfing Association. While waveski surfing is slightly different from standard surfing, the involvement still speaks to South Africa’s rising influence in a range of wave-riding sporting codes.

As the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships continue in Peru, Team SA’s young surfers are testing themselves against the world’s best, but also part of a bigger story about a sport gaining real traction across the country.
