Santa Cause for Paws did an incredible thing. The volunteer-run group have raised R1 139 500 in sponsorships for 216 animal welfare organisations this year!
South Africa (21 December 2025) – Over one million rands raised to support animal welfare across South Africa. That’s what the entirely volunteer-run Santa Cause for Paws team has achieved this year.
That’s 4,558 animals from 216 different organisations benefitting from the initiative over Christmas.
Ordinary people, who all work full-time jobs, made it happen.
Under the registered NPC, the team raises funds through sponsorships and pledges on Facebook. These funds go towards much-needed gifts for thousands of shelter animals.
Every year, animal welfare organisations apply to be part of the drive. Specific criteria must be met along with a wish-list of items they genuinely need. The organisation aims to help as many of these vetted applicants as possible.
Once the drive goes live, each organisation gets a dedicated album on Facebook where images of the animals in their care are shared. Supporters scroll, spot a face that tugs at their heart, and comment ‘sponsor’.
From there, a R250 sponsorship covers that animal. The money is pooled, and at the end of the year, volunteers shop specifically for what each organisation asked for. These items usually include food, treats, toys, and other essentials.

Another plus is these organisations get exposure as some people may never have heard of them before, especially the smaller groups that we support.”
Beyond the Facebook drive, the organisation also receives support via its website, where people can pledge funds or donations that contribute towards the festive drive.
The tiny team of volunteers passed on 100% of the donations made this year. Not a cent went elsewhere.
“We have managed to pass on 100% of the sponsored animals funds for 2025 and are just so grateful for the tiny team of volunteers that make this possible.” the team shares. “We are incredibly thankful to each and every person that sponsors an animal that is part of our drive. Whether it’s supporting 1 animal or 10, we are blessed to have such amazing supporters.”
