With nothing but kindness and a little bit of water, two brave boys became the unexpected guardians of an injured pit bull on the side of the N2.
Cape Town, South Africa (05 January 2026) – When a small pit bull was tragically struck by a car on the N2, two young brave boys became her heroes.
The poor dog had crawled to the side of the road and was trying to make her way home when the brothers discovered her and realised she could no longer move.
Without a phone to call for help, they carefully covered her to provide shade and gave her water.
There must have been greater forces working to keep her alive and well, however, because Help a Paw happened to be running a clinic nearby that very same day. The boys were able to reach them quickly, getting the dog the desperate help she required.
After a quick assessment of her injuries, members of Help a Paw realised she was badly hurt. Thankfully, Prosper from Animal Welfare Society Helderberg was in the area and was able to take her to the clinic for further care.
The young boys were from a family that Help a Paw knows well, and easily moved the team with their genuine care and compassion.
“They could have walked past her, but instead knew they needed to help.”
In a heartwarming gesture to reward their kindness, last week, the team paid the children a visit at the home, armed with a bag full of treats and snacks, as well as a monetary donation for their grandmother to buy food for the family. Each boy also received money as a thank you.
“The family is one we know well, and the grandmother looks after the children and three dogs of her own. She is bringing them up to love animals.”
