This year’s Denis Hurley Centre’s Street Store was more than just a ‘clothing store’. It was a day of shared dignity, hope, and connection for 1,128 of Durban’s resilient residents.
Durban, South Africa (08 June 2026) – Over the chilly weekend, a little corner in downtown Durban was overcome by a wave of warmth as the Denis Hurley Centre held its Street Store 2026 event – a literal hug for some of the most vulnerable in the community.
Organised in close partnership with Grace Family Church and Grace Aid, the initiative addresses the basic human needs of those experiencing homelessness, not just by handing out random, mismatched donation bags, but by setting up a completely free, open-air pop-up clothing and shoe store.
This past Saturday, donated clothes, toys, shoes and other items were neatly displayed for attendees to browse and choose exactly what they needed, restoring a sense of agency and dignity that poverty often strips away.

There were also various other services available to visitors of the Street Store, including footwashing, massages, haircuts, food, and prayer. Other partners present who offered additional services on the day included Alcoholics Anonymous, SADAG (The South African Depression and Anxiety Group), UKZN’s College of Law and Management Studies Law Clinic, Durban University of Technology’s Somatology and Chiropractic Departments, ClearMe, and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

The Denis Hurley Centre provides a range of services to respond to the needs of marginalised groups in inner-city Durban, especially homeless people and refugees. Volunteers of all faiths and nationalities work side by side at the centre to help all communities and restore dignity and hope where they have been hanging by a thread.

And by the end of Saturday, a record 1,128 homeless people were served!
That is 1,128 lives – men, women, and children – that were seen and supported as people first, not judged by their circumstances, as they try to navigate what is likely the most difficult season of their lives.
It took a village to make the Street Store 2026 a success. A huge well done to every volunteer, partner, and donor who came together to wrap the community in dignity and care.
