After years of sacrifice, limited opportunities and unwavering determination, Bernice Ferreira has become South Africa’s first female IBO world champion.

Johannesburg, South Africa (09 June 2026) – For Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira, becoming a world champion was never just about winning a title. It was about proving to herself that years of sacrifice, perseverance and unwavering belief were worth it.

Just weeks ago, she etched her name into South African sporting history by becoming the country’s first female IBO world champion. Yet behind the belt is a story of resilience and commitment.

“I was introduced to boxing when I was still really young. My dad was still fighting at the time. My mom tells me stories of how, when I was two years old, I would be ringside shouting for my dad to win his fight.”

Combat sport runs deep in the Ferreira family. Her father boxed while her mother practised karate, making it almost inevitable that she would eventually find her place in the ring.

“For most of my amateur career there were no females. I only had two amateur fights on my record, but I’ve been training my entire life.”

The lack of competition often left her frustrated. She would step away from the sport, only to return because boxing remained an important part of who she was.

Her sporting talents extended beyond boxing. Ferreira excelled in kickboxing, winning multiple South African titles and earning selection for the world championships. However, financial constraints prevented her from competing internationally. That disappointment could easily have marked the end of her sporting journey. Instead, it became fuel for a dream that never left her.

Today, the nickname “The Badger” has become synonymous with her relentless approach to life and sport. And interestingly, she chose the nickname herself.

“Badgers are really small but really tough animals. They’re not scared of anything. They’ll take on hyenas, elephants, snakes, whatever. They’re very tenacious and they’re going to get the honey regardless of what’s in their way.”

Away from the bright lights of championship boxing, Ferreira’s life remains remarkably grounded. She spends her mornings training, works during the day at a bakery producing rusks and biscuits, and later coaches young boxers in Northcliff. Her days are long, but they reflect the work ethic that has defined her journey.

For a full year after receiving her professional licence, little happened. Eventually, she was linked with a manager and mentor, Jaun van Blerk, whose support helped open doors and create opportunities that had previously seemed out of reach.

Today, she sees growing momentum and increased investment in women’s boxing.

“I think we’re definitely moving in the right direction.”

For Ferreira, winning the IBO world title represented far more than sporting success. It was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and a tribute to the sacrifices her parents made throughout her life.

“My main goal was definitely to become a world champion and make my parents as proud as I possibly can. When I did become the IBO world champion, that whole weight was taken off my shoulders.”

A major opportunity awaits in August when she is expected to face Caroline Veyre in Atlanta, Georgia. Ferreira will put her IBO title on the line while Veyre brings her WBC world title into the contest. And if successful, the fight could move her one step closer to becoming a multi-title world champion.

And much like the animal that inspired her nickname, Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira is not done fighting yet.

As Ferreira prepares for the next chapter of her career, she is also seeking support from businesses, sponsors and individuals who would like to be part of her journey. Those interested in partnering with the South African champion can reach out via [email protected] or [email protected]
