The food shelf at Husky Heaven Rescue is empty – urgent small acts of kindness can help keep almost 100 doggies fed.

Centurion, South Africa (12 June 2026) – There’s a rising cost to everything right now. South Africans feel it. While we’re filling up at the petrol station, or at the till paying for food.

As household budgets tighten, donations toward animal welfare organisations become harder to make, too.

Across the country, sponsorships at rescue centres and shelters slow down, and support starts to thin out. For those caring for dozens of animals every day, that can quickly become a crisis.

That is a reality facing Husky Heaven Rescue in Centurion right now.

The rescue, which provides a safe haven for more than 90 dogs, recently shared that its food shelves have run completely dry. The team says support has gradually decreased over time as many of their regular donors face financial challenges of their own.

“We are reaching out with an urgent plea for assistance, Our funds are depleted as our support has stopped over time as we know many are struggling themselves…” the organisation shares.

It’s an understandable reality. These are tough times for many South Africans.

But it’s also a reminder that even during difficult seasons, small acts of kindness can make a remarkable difference when many people come together…

For years, Husky Heaven Rescue has been a voice for dogs who have nowhere else to turn. While the organisation specialises in rescuing Huskies, it has also opened its doors to other breeds and mixed-breed dogs that needed urgent help.

Many of the dogs arrive after being abandoned, surrendered, or found wandering the streets in poor condition. Rescues come from across South Africa, each beginning a journey of rehabilitation that includes veterinary care, sterilisation, vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, and plenty of patience and love.

Beyond rescue work, the team also focuses on education, awareness around animal welfare, and encouraging responsible pet ownership. School groups regularly visit the facility to complete community service hours, while volunteers help provide companionship and support for the dogs in their care.

Like many rescues, however, the monthly costs are significant.

Food, veterinary care, staff salaries, electricity, maintenance, and ongoing improvements all come with a price tag. And while the rescue continues working tirelessly to provide the best possible care, it relies heavily on public support to keep going.

The good news is that helping doesn’t have to mean making a huge contribution. A single bag of dog food, a small donation, sharing their appeal online, volunteering some time, or attending a fundraising event can all help lighten the load…

Ways to help Husky Heaven Rescue NPC

If you’re a helper and would like to step in for the rescue Huskies, here are a few ways to do so:

  • A bag of dog food dropped off at the rescue – 188 Bodley Road, Laezonia, Centurion – makes an immediate difference.
  • A financial contribution, however modest, helps keep the lights on and the bowls full.
  • If you’re in Johannesburg, you can even do it while dancing. Retro Reboot – Charity Night on 18 July at Rumours Lounge, Strydompark is a fun way to support! Find out more here.
  • Follow and share their page so their next plea reaches more eyes, faster.
