South Africans first met Sidney Miller battling wind and rain on the Sea Point promenade. Today, thanks to an extraordinary outpouring of kindness, his story has become one of ubuntu, healing, dignity and hope.
Western Cape, South Africa (18 June 2026) – A storm, a promenade and a chance encounter between two strangers… at the time, none of us knew we were witnessing the beginning of one of the most remarkable stories of kindness South Africa would embrace this year.
When Chad Nathan stopped his run in the pouring Cape Town rain to help a man struggling through the storm in a wheelchair, he wasn’t looking for a viral moment… he saw another human being who needed help and decided not to walk past. What followed captured hearts across the country and beyond, turning Sidney Miller’s life into a story of compassion, connection and second chances.
We’ve followed Sidney’s journey from the very beginning.
First came the viral video, then came the flood of support. Within days, hundreds of thousands of rands had been raised by complete strangers who wanted to help a man many had never met. Donations climbed beyond R400,000 and eventually surpassed R500,000 as South Africans rallied around someone who, by his own account, had spent years feeling unseen.
Along the way, organisations and individuals stepped forward to help. An electric wheelchair was donated and customised to his needs. Warm clothing arrived ahead of winter. A new phone found its way into his hands. Medical support, counselling offers and practical assistance followed. What began as one act of kindness became a movement powered by thousands of people choosing to care.
The journey has not been without challenges. Sidney underwent the amputation of his second leg and faced a long road to recovery. Yet even while recovering in hospital, he remained the same person South Africans had come to know through Chad’s videos… beyond generous to others around him. When Chad arrived with snacks and treats, Sidney wanted to share them with fellow patients. When support poured in, he spoke about simple dreams: a safe home and a better future for himself and his mother.
Now, a new update from The Angel Network brings the story full circle.
The organisation has confirmed that the funds raised for Sidney are being safely managed on his behalf, ensuring every contribution is used in his best interests. The money has been placed in a ring-fenced, interest-bearing account specifically for Sidney, with payments being made directly for essentials such as food, medication, electricity and other needs as he continues his recovery.
The update also offers reassurance to the thousands of people who have followed his journey.

Working alongside homelessness-focused organisation Souper Troopers, as well as social auxiliary worker Taz, who has her own lived experience of homelessness, The Angel Network says the focus remains firmly on Sidney’s healing and long-term wellbeing.
His operation was successful and he is now being supported by leading wound specialists. Offers of assistance have continued arriving from doctors, eye specialists and caring South Africans wanting to play a role in improving his quality of life.
But perhaps the most beautiful part in the latest update had nothing to do with money, medical care or donations… while travelling to a doctor’s appointment, Sidney asked to make an unexpected detour. He wanted to visit friends and buy them hot chocolates. The gesture says everything about the man at the centre of this story. After receiving life-changing support from strangers, Sidney’s instinct was to share a little warmth with people who matter to him. Kindness is rarely a one-way street. It moves from one person to another, growing bigger with every act of generosity.
