When Jonathan noticed a gogo carrying a heavy bag, he offered to be her grandson for the day! From helping with her luggage and chatting away to making sure she safely found her way to the right taxi rank, their unexpected encounter left them both feeling full and just goes to show that a little kindness can make a world of difference to someone’s journey.

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 July 2026) – Sometimes the most unexpected encounters are the ones that leave the most lasting impressions. Jonathan Malatji experienced one of those moments this past Saturday while travelling by taxi to the Johannesburg CBD.

During the trip, Jonathan noticed an elderly Xhosa woman carrying a rather heavy-looking bag.

“When we were asked to change from one taxi to another at Bree, I offered to carry her bag. I won’t lie, it was very heavy, but I didn’t mind at all,” Jonathan shared in a post.

The woman was heading to the MTN Rank to catch a taxi transporting luggage to the Eastern Cape. When they reached Jeppe Street near Small Street, it was time for Jonathan to get off. Realising the gogo would struggle on her own, he told both her and the driver that he would help her the rest of the way. She gratefully accepted the offer.

As they walked together, they began to chat. The elderly woman was so impressed by Jonathan’s fluent isiXhosa that she could hardly believe he was actually from Limpopo and had taught himself the language. In that moment, what started as a simple offer to help with heavy luggage naturally blossomed into a wonderful moment of human connection, filled with laughter and easy conversation about culture between two strangers.

Jonathan even made sure to defend the gogo against a suspicious-looking group of men near the MTN Rank.

“I then asked Gogo to remind me where exactly she was travelling to. She mentioned the place again (I’ve forgotten the name), but I realised it was in the Eastern Cape. I explained that MTN Rank wouldn’t have those long-distance taxis and that she actually needed to go to Wanderers Taxi Rank.”

And so they redirected their steps and made their way to the correct taxi rank, Jonathan still happily carrying the gogo’s precious cargo.

“I assured her not to worry. I had time. On our way there, she stopped because she was struggling to catch her breath. We paused for a while, and she told me she’d recently started taking high blood pressure medication, which sometimes made her feel that way,” shared Jonathan, who remained patient and attentive throughout the journey.

They eventually reached their rank, and just as the grateful gogo was about to reach for some money to give Jonathan as a token of thanks, he quickly stopped her, saying he was simply happy to help.

The gogo thanked the young man, wished him well, and they parted ways.

“I continued with my journey wearing the biggest smile because of that little encounter,” Jonathan said.

He shared that the unusual and beautiful encounter not only reminded him of his grandmother but left him feeling good about helping a vulnerable elder, especially in a part of town that isn’t always safe.

“I was reluctant to share this story, but it was simply too wholesome to keep to myself. Thankfully, her trust wasn’t misplaced. I was simply a grandson helping a grandmother.”

Now, isn’t that just the perfect timeline cleanser? The world needs more helpers. Thank you for being one of them, Jonathan!
