Their playful back-and-forth about life in South Africa and the UK has social media users picking sides and sharing their own favourites.

United Kingdom (27 July 2026) – Springbok pride, First Thursdays, restaurant prices and South African accents… those were just some of the topics up for debate when a South African husband and his British wife decided to compare life in Mzansi and the UK.

The couple, known online as JeanandPheebs, have social media users in stitches after posting a light-hearted video titled Things South Africa Does Better Than the UK.

The friendly debate bounced between some of South Africa’s favourite talking points. His wife gave a nod to Cape Town’s famous First Thursdays, describing the monthly event as something she wished existed back home.

Food was another hot topic. The pair agreed that while South Africans sometimes complain about restaurant prices, eating out in Mzansi still offers incredible value compared to the UK, especially once you convert the currency.

Jean wasn’t entirely convinced that South Africans are friendlier than Brits, but his wife quickly reminded him how often strangers complimented her while she was in South Africa.

Judging by the reactions online, plenty of South Africans were more than happy to keep the debate going in the comments.

Finally, the accents. Asked whether South African or British accents were more attractive, she didn’t hesitate to choose South Africa’s.

What a fun reminder of the little things that make South Africa unique.
