The Springbok coach reminded South Africa’s 51-member squad that wearing the national colours is an achievement earned through hard work, not luck.
South Africa (06 August 2026) – Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has sent a heartfelt message of encouragement to South Africa’s young athletes as they begin their campaign at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
With more than 1,800 athletes from 147 countries competing between 5 and 9 August, South Africa’s 51-member squad will be hoping to build on the country’s impressive showing at the previous championships, where Team SA finished sixth on the overall medals table.
But before the competition got underway, Erasmus reminded the athletes that simply earning a place on the national team is already an achievement worth celebrating.
“You are very privileged, but you’re not lucky. You deserve it. You guys are there,” he said.
The Springbok mentor encouraged the athletes to soak up the experience of representing South Africa on one of athletics’ biggest junior stages, adding that success isn’t always measured by medals.
“Being successful isn’t always winning it or getting there. It’s just being there and representing your country and wearing the colours of your country.”
South Africa heads into the championships with confidence after another strong season on the track and in the field.
As the championships get underway in Oregon, Team SA will have the backing of the country and a reminder from the Springbok coach that wearing the green and gold is already something to be proud of.
