It’s a packed sporting weekend, with South African teams in action across rugby and cricket while the US Open and Formula 1 also take centre stage.

Global (11 September 2026) – It’s another busy weekend of sport, with the US Open heading towards its finals, Formula 1 back in action and plenty happening on the South African sporting calendar.

Here are some of the big local stories to keep an eye on.

Currie Cup Final Showdown

The 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division will crown its champion on Saturday, with defending champions Suzuki Griquas hosting the Airlink Pumas in Kimberley.

It’s a repeat of the 2022 final, when the Pumas stunned Griquas on the same ground to claim their first Currie Cup title.

Kick-off is at 15:00 on Saturday.

Proteas Women Are About to Make History

The Proteas Women are giving some of their younger players an opportunity to step up as they prepare to face Zimbabwe.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt says she wants the next generation to express themselves, with the team using the series to build greater depth.

Four players could make their international debuts, including Titans fast bowler Caitlin Wyngaard, all-rounder Luyanda Nzuza, former SA U19 and Warriors seamer Nthabiseng Nini and Western Province wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander.

Proteas Men in ODI Series

The Proteas Men are also back in action as they continue their three-match ODI series against Namibia in Windhoek.

South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the series after Wednesday’s opener, with Jordan Hermann grabbing plenty of attention after smashing 150 on debut.

The Proteas are without several of their regular stars, including Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke, but that has opened the door for some of the younger players to make their mark.

Springboks in Baltimore

And then there’s the big one for rugby fans.

The Springboks head to Baltimore for the fourth and final Test against New Zealand in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, with South Africa leading the series 2-1.

That means a win would seal the series for the Boks, while a New Zealand victory would leave the four-Test contest all square.

The match kicks off at 17:00 local time in Baltimore, which is 23:00 in South Africa.

Away from those four, the US Open is moving towards the business end of the tournament and Formula 1 is also on the schedule, so there is certainly no shortage of sport to keep an eye on this weekend.
