After being found with little more than a few items of clothing and some dog food, Johan and Seun have been given temporary shelter while planning for a longer-term solution.

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 September 2026) – An elderly man and his loyal dog have been given a temporary roof over their heads after being found homeless on the streets following his eviction.

Johan was walking alongside his elderly Labrador, Seun, when an animal rescue worker, Stephan Hendricks, spotted the pair while driving past. Seun, who is deaf and old, was drinking water from a muddy puddle, and the sight stayed with the driver long after they had passed.

Three kilometres down the road, they turned around to find out what had happened.

Johan explained that he had been evicted from his home that very morning, leaving him and Seun with nowhere safe to go. Despite the difficult circumstances, there was one thing Johan was certain about: he was not going to leave his dog behind.

The pair had little with them. Johan carried a small bag containing a few clothes and some dog pellets, but they did not even have a blanket to keep them warm.

When Johan was told that they had somewhere to sleep, he broke down in tears. He hugged Seun and reassured his faithful companion.

It was a small moment of comfort in an incredibly difficult situation, but there is still plenty that needs to be done. Seun will be taken to the vet for a full check-up, while Johan needs basic necessities such as clothing, toiletries, food and blankets as a more permanent solution is explored.

Anyone who would like to support Johan and Seun can contribute towards their immediate needs through No More Tears Animal Rescue.
