Local Heroes

We’ve been tagged in this story many times over in the last 24 hours! South Africa is proud of two local heroes who jumped towards danger when they noticed a fisherman in distress.

Strand, South Africa (11 September 2026) – A Western Cape fisherman took to Facebook this week, singing the praises of two young men who saved his life.

The fisherman was out for a catch at Strand when he made the decision to move from one reef to another. Before he could think about turning around, a strong undercurrent swept him out to sea. Thankfully, two young men were nearby, casting a watchful eye…

“I would like express my biggest gratitude to the 2 boys who saved my life today…” shares the fisherman on Facebook. “While attempting to move from the one reef to the next, I underestimated the undercurrent between the two reefs, I was swept away with my reef bag with fish…I tried to swim back but the current was too strong I started to swallow huge amounts of water and blacked out for a few seconds…”

Stefan and Marce from Gordon’s Bay jumped straight into the water and swam towards the fisherman in distress.

“The 2 boys…swam towards me attempting to loosen my baitbelt [and] reefbag but [were] unsuccessful. [Marce] gave me his fishing rod with his Bigboss reel to press against the current which allowed me to stay kinda afloat…Stefan pushed me towards the reef where [Marce] allowed me to [lean] on his shoulder.I finally reached a high enough rock to stand on to recover, I had no energy left…”

Things could have turned out very differently if the two young heroes hadn’t been there to help. The fisherman – who is also a father and fiancé – shared his deepest appreciation.

“I would like to thank these 2 boys from the bottom of my heart, without your help I would not be able to see my 5 year old daughter and fiancé again. If anyone know them, please ask them to send me a message on this page. My fiance would like to meet them and personally thank them for their great Heroism and bravery today.”

Commenters were quick to applaud Marce and Stefan for their incredible act of bravery.

“The lads are legends!” wrote one commenter.

“Well done gents for helping another human in distress. Standing ovation!” said another.

“Well done boys this is amazing sure your parents are very proud of whom they raised,” wrote another.
