Monica November grew up in Elsies River, never imagining a future in Early Childhood Development. However, today she is the gentle principal of Hope of Africa in Delft, who is attentive to children’s needs, turning her own childhood classroom struggles into motivation to create a safe, joyful place where every child feels encouraged to learn.

Growing up in Elsies River, Monica November never imagined she would dedicate her life to Early Childhood Development (ECD). Having struggled to find joy in the classroom herself, she understands how vital it is for children to feel safe, supported, and encouraged – because she was once that child herself.
After completing her matric, Monica furthered her education at the University of the Western Cape before pursuing a career in the medical aid industry, where she worked for 15–20 years. Although she built a career in the industry, it was never where her heart truly lay, and she longed for a change and an opportunity to pursue something more meaningful.
Her journey into ECD began when she was approached to assist her current husband, David November, with the crèches and soup kitchens he had established through his church.
She was promised sponsorship to further her studies; however, the support came to an unexpected end just three months in. Facing this challenge together, they persevered, relying on their two crèches and two soup kitchens to get by.
During Covid-19, David explored opportunities to expand their work through government ECD tenders, which led to the establishment of Hope of Africa, a blessing they never imagined would come their way.
Today, Monica is the kind and gentle principal of Hope of Africa in Delft, whose journey shows how our own experiences can inspire us to make a difference in the lives of others.
She is the third remarkable woman featured in Ladles of Love’s Heroes of Hope series, which highlights and honours the unsung leaders of ECD centres and preschools in underserved and impoverished communities across South Africa. Monica was also one of the winners at Ladles of Love’s 2026 Excellence Awards in the categories of Inclusive Education and the Hero of Hope Award.
Her childhood experiences continue to shape her approach to education, wanting every child to experience the classroom differently from how she did.
