South African banks are firing back (hilariously) at the new African-Nasti Nando’s Advert.
Comparative advertising, as the name suggests, is when an advert compares the advertiser’s product or service with that of another party (who is usually a competitor). But Comparative advertising is not allowed in South Africa, the concept has always raised the question as to whether the adverts may infringe the trade mark of the other party whose product is being compared.
Until social media opened up a whole new space for brands to interact with each other… for our entertainment.
Nando’s recently launched an advert “trolling” ABSA for their African-Nasti but the bank is firing back (and then some).
Over the years, Nando’s has not only given us delicious PERi-PERi flame-grilled chicken, but food for thought with their adverts, campaigns and social commentary, with the latest one questioning the surplus of “Afro-futurism” on our screens at the moment and pushing the #MoreSAFlavour hashtag.
But ABSA, and various banks are firing back with hilarious social media posts responding to the new advert, and South Africans can’t get enough of it.
It took the ABSA team two days to respond but their post pointed out that their “Flexi Value Bundle bank account was cheaper than chicken and offered way more value than just flavour.
#MoreSAFlavour is great but #MoreSAValue is 🔥🔥🔥. Get a Flexi Value Bundle bank account for only R59.52pm. After all, it’s #CheaperThanChicken pic.twitter.com/azon3RDm4F

But it’s the other bank’s replies that are really making social media users laugh.
Capitec immediately responded to ABSA, pointing out that switching to their bank would allow you to buy so much more Nando’s chicken, with all the bank fees saved (with the assumption that they are cheaper than ABSA).
Imagine all the @NandosSA chicken you could buy if you switched to us and saved on bank fees 🔥🔥🔥

Even Nedbank weighed in on the conversation by letting social media users know that they would stick to handling South Africa’s money while Nando’s can handle the sauce.
We'll let @NandosSA handle the sauce, while we handle your money😉

The social media replies have shown that there are ways to bend the rules (when it comes to Comparative Advertising) and more so, the fun online conversation has proved that even big corporate banks don’t always need to take themselves so seriously.
