Thomas More College hosted their annual Long Walk which is used to do so much more than test a students fitness; it helps them build a meaningful friendship.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa – Thomas More College has a standing tradition for all pupils in Grade 1 to 12. They do it every year as a way to build up character, friendships and personal strength to overcome the obstacles that life puts down.
This school tradition has been going for 57 years and has proven to be highly successful. Children from Grade 1 to Matric are encouraged to walk between 3km and 80km in 1 day.
The walk starts at 1 am and is a highly anticipated school activity for all. Those planning on walking the 80km route, leave early and all going well, cross the schoolyard at 8:15 am. Every pupil that completes the 80km goal walk gets to ring the school bell.
“The main focus being our Grade 8 to 12 children who set themselves personal goals. The event for the High school children and their families is broken into a 55km walk and 80km walk which starts at 1 am, and the last walker comes into the school grounds at approx 8:15 pm, it is also only those 80km walkers who finish that get to ring the school bell.” – Claudia Lee Levarelli
The walk encourages people to build friendships along the way, helping fellow learners and their families. Claudia also says it builds character and real strength to overcome one’s challenges.
“It is one very special day on the Thomas More College school calendar. Some have even compared it to the Comrades Marathon, and in fact, many have said it is even better! We are so proud of this tradition, long may it last”
