Thembinkosi Tera Mkonko is currently teaching in Korea and sharing a touch of South African culture with the students by teaching them to gumboot dance.
Seoul, South Korea (17 February 2020) – When travelling around the world, it is essential to embrace other cultures, but it is also great to have an exchange of cultures. When you learn another language, it is nice to share your own too.
Thembinkosi Tera Mkonko has been teaching a group of South Korean students how to gumboot dance and they did so well! He posted the videos of them dancing and it has been shared hundreds of times.
Gumboot dancing started in the South African mines. According to the history books, miners used their gumboots and to communicate during work hours where they were often forced to remain silent for hours at a time. The repressive work environment created an art form that is now deeply rooted in the heritage of South Africa.
The dance spread in popularity throughout the communities surrounding the mines and became an essential part of life. After years of repression, the art form now uplifts so many!
