When Antoinette showed up to feed the cats on Sunday, she was met with the most wonderful surprise!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (07 July 2026) – When cat people do kind things!

Antoinette feeds the Uvongo Pier Feral Cats and Birds Colony. Yes, cats and birds. And, apparently, a dassie too. They all get along, and they’re all well looked after by Antoinette, a compassionate community member who has helped them for four years.

When she turned up to feed the colony on Sunday, she arrived to the most wonderful surprise. A stranger, a kind-hearted community member, had taken the time to do something absolutely incredible.

A full-on wooden kitty shelter had been built for the colony, complete with a lounging pad, sleeping coves, comfortable mats, and warm blankets. They had also left food for the cats, and treats for the birds and the dassie.

“What a surprise!!!!!!!! Went to feed at the Uvongo Pier Feral Cats and Birds Colony and saw a new little house had been built for the feral cats to lay in. Thank you kind people who did this. Secondly their food bowl was filled with pellets. Thank you for that. Thirdly little blankets were put in the boxes which were built and donated for them. How do I say thank you. Fourthly the birds were given treats as well as dassie Larry. God bless you good people and my heartfelt thanks to you.” shared Antionette.

Antoinette shared the news to Facebook, where community members and supporters shared their appreciation for the selfless act of kindness that will now see a stray colony of kitties get through long nights with more warmth and comfort.

“Amazing! Also such a nice way to do something like this with young kids to teach them that kindness and compassion can make such a huge difference with all creatures great and small.” wrote Yolande.

“Wonderful to read that there are still kind and caring people. Thank you,” said Rose.

“Imagine if everyone donated some wood what could be done,” suggested Ursula.

Those who show up for vulnerable animals have a special place in our hearts. To the kind individual who carried out this incredible act of kindness – thank you! The world is a better place with you in it.
