Aviwe Tsewu makes history as the first Black woman in SA’s Open Ladies Indoor Cricket Team and now needs support to represent the nation in Sri Lanka.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 August 2025) – South Africa is on the brink of history at the 2025 Indoor Cricket World Cup and leading the way is Aviwe Tsewu, a pioneering athlete from Quzini, Qonce in the Eastern Cape.
Aviwe has become the first Black woman ever selected for the South African Open Ladies Indoor Cricket Team, set to represent the country in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 22 September to 5 October. Her selection is a personal milestone and a breakthrough moment for transformation and representation in South African sport.
Her journey tells a story of determination. From humble rural beginnings, Aviwe has worked her way into the national spotlight while remaining deeply rooted in service to others. Today, she is a Sports Coordinator and PE teacher at Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg, where she balances teaching with coaching cricket and netball, running inter-school tournaments, and mentoring young athletes. She is proof that professional excellence and sporting passion can go hand in hand.
On the field, Aviwe’s talent speaks for itself. She is a double gold medalist at the Interprovincial Indoor Cricket Tournament, founder of a successful school girls’ cricket team, and a decorated bowler in the Central Gauteng Lions leagues. Her rise is a product of persistence, skill, and an unshakable love for the game.
Now she needs South Africa’s support to take this next step. Indoor cricket is self-funded, which means Aviwe must raise R62,000 to cover her flights, accommodation, kit, visas, fees, food, and transport for the World Cup.
This is more than just a fundraising campaign. Supporting Aviwe is helping a young woman stand tall on the world stage as a role model for girls across South Africa.
