Despite a tough quarterfinal, the Springbok Women and New Zealand players shared a heartfelt moment of sportsmanship, culture, and mutual respect.

Exeter, England (15 September 2025) – The quarterfinal match at Sandy Park was tense from the first whistle. The Springbok Women fought hard against the powerhouse New Zealand side, keeping the scoreline close in the first half. But as the game progressed, New Zealand’s experience and strength shone through, earning them the victory.

The Springbok Women played in their first-ever World Cup.

Yet, it wasn’t the scoreboard that left a lasting impression, but what happened afterwards. Full-time scenes captured a moment that would make any sports fan smile: players from both teams came together, forming a circle on the pitch. They danced, sang, and shared a celebration that brought together their unique cultures in a way that transcended competition on the field.

Some players wiped away tears, others laughed. It was a reminder that sportsmanship and camaraderie can shine brightest in moments of both triumph and defeat.

New Zealand’s captain, Ruahei Demant, shared her thoughts with the South African team after the match.

“Thank you for today. It was hard, you were so strong.”

She went on to wish the Springbok Women well in their next journey, a gesture met with mutual respect from the South African side, who also wished New Zealand luck in the semi-finals.

Fans and spectators were quick to share their admiration for the post-match moment. Sharing the clip of the two teams celebrating together, showing a side of rugby that goes beyond tackles and tries.

It was a scene that spoke volumes. Fierce rivals on the field, yet united in spirit off it.
