South Africa has pulled together to show their strength and resilience in the tragic time of the Cape Fires. Donations have poured in to help the communities rebuild their lives. One thing that has been missed is educational materials such as books and study materials.
The Knysna Literary Festival has decided to create a book drive to help rebuild the collection of books in the area. The books will go to schools, libraries and people in need.
“Like so many South Africans, I’ve been watching what has been happening in Knysna over the past week with utter dismay. It has been devastating to see so many people lose their homes and their possessions”
“However, the tragedy has also brought out the very best in South Africans as they have opened their hearts. There has been an outpouring of generosity, with clothes, toiletries, blankets and food flowing into the area.
“But one thing I have noticed people haven’t thought to appeal for or to donate is books”
Books create a place of refuge, an escape of sorts. Donations of books will create a huge difference in the lives of many. Publishing houses Pan Macmillan and Penguin Random House have committed to donating books to the cause!
Members of the public can also make donations too, new books and used books are welcome! The Knysna Literary Festival staff will be distributing the books to communities and individuals. There will also be a central point in Knysna for people to collect books.
