Samkelo followed in his dad’s animal-loving footsteps when he noticed an elderly dog that was ill and in need of help. The SPCA has praised the kindness and compassion of Field Officer Siya’s son.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA recently took to social media to celebrate two of its own – Field Officer Siya Ntuli and his 13-year-old son, Samkelo.
Siya has been with the SPCA for 11 long years. He started there as a cleaner when his son was only two years old. He worked hard to get his driver’s license, and eventually qualified as a field officer. The SPCA says that his passion for helping animals and educating young people in its communities is evident every day, but perhaps no more clearly than in Samkelo…
On Sunday morning, Samkelo was on his way to the shop when he noticed an elderly, sick dog. Others had walked past, but he stopped.
“Many people may have walked past, but Samkelo knew he couldn’t simply leave it. When he tried to approach it, the frightened dog became defensive. Recognising that he needed experienced help, Samkelo ran to fetch his father.”
Samkelo could tell that the dog he’d found clearly needed help. When it reacted out of fear, he knew that with his dad’s help, they could still help the frightened animal to safety.
“Together, father and son worked patiently to rescue the terrified dog, who was so scared he attempted to bite them both. Thanks to their determination and compassion, they were able to bring him safely to our SPCA clinic, where he received veterinary care, a hearty meal, and plenty of much-needed TLC.”
The frightened four-legged friend received the care he needed, thanks to a young man who knew that he was capable of making a difference. He’d seen his dad do it so many times before.
“Stories like this remind us why humane education is so important. As SPCA staff, we often see our children following in our footsteps, showing kindness to animals, standing up for those who cannot speak for themselves, and growing into compassionate young people who care about the world around them.” shares the SPCA.
