South African movie continues to win hearts and minds: Beyond the River clinches Four SAFTA nominations

Beyond The River

A South African movie inspired by the true story and friendship of Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks has just been nominated for 4 SAFTAs

In 2017, Beyond the River captured the imaginations of South Africans across the board with its touching (and true) story of reaching across the racial and economic divide to achieve true friendship and partnership.

The real-life story behind this moving film is based on the Dusi-gold winning canoeing pair Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks. Ntondini is one of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club’s (SCARC) star paddlers.

The film has been nominated for four SAFTAs including:

  • Best Achievement in Cinematography (Feature Film)
  • Best Achievement in Editing (Feature film)
  • Best Actor Presented by McCafe (Feature Film): Grant Swanby
  • Best Feature Film

The Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club was established in 2004 by Brad Fisher (CEO and founder of Adreach) and he has been the main driving force behind the Club ever since. Fisher says of the film: “I see the story of both the Club and the movie as ones of overcoming the odds and ultimately triumphing over adversity.

We backed the movie in the hope that it would inspire other clubs (not just in sport) to reach out and partner less fortunate organisations that share common interests to achieve great things together. This philosophy could even be applied at school level. (Schools from diverse backgrounds partnering in sports)”

Congratulations to Robbie Thorpe and Craig Fremont (the writers and directors) for the movie’s well-deserved nominations and for capturing this great story in such a compelling manner. I really hope the movie can reach far and wide as it really shows what SA can achieve when we get on with things in a positive manner.

Beyond the River will be screening on MNet in March.
