Through recent generous donations of sanitary wear and dispensers, the SPAR Petals Project is on its continued mission to empower girls and women, boosting their confidence and ensuring they can thrive.
Cape Town, South Africa (03 July 2025) – More girls and young women in need will receive crucial support to navigate that often challenging and uncomfortable “time of the month”, thanks to the continued support of the SPAR Petals Project.
The recently held Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series significantly boosted the efforts of two charities dedicated to fighting period poverty in the region.
For the third consecutive year, the Boland Veterans’ Cricket Association’s (BVCA) Dignity Project received a generous donation of SPAR Petals sanitary pads. This year, the initiative expanded its reach to include Against Period Poverty (APP), further amplifying the impact of this vital cause.
BVSA received R100,000 worth of sanitary pads, and APP received R30,000, plus two sanitary pad dispensers to the value of R75,000!

BVCA, comprising mostly male players, are deeply committed to the development of women’s cricket and the fundamental right of equal opportunities for girls.
On receiving the donation, James Albanie, coordinator of the BVCA Dignity Project, said that the impact of the donations within the communities has been deeply moving.
“Along with assisting school attendance, we also encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle,” he added.
They had hardly received the donation when BVCA volunteers were already out in the field, delivering pads to the most vulnerable.
“They were waiting. The network is strong. Thank you for the trust.” James said.
APP, founded by the formidable Lindsay Adams, works tirelessly to ensure that adolescent girls don’t miss out on an education due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products.
Lindsay is passionate about breaking the stigma around menstruation and believes, “to help even one girl is to restore dignity and opportunity.”
“A huge thank you for SPAR’s generous donation of Petals sanitary pads. With this donation, we are able to successfully distribute to more than 15 schools on the Cape Flats,” said Lindsay.
This continued support ensures that essential resources reach those who need them most, helping to restore dignity and confidence during a vulnerable time.
At the recent handover, Elsabe van Zyl–Felix, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape, thanked the representatives of these two organisations for being part of the journey.
“Together we are running towards a brighter, more empowered future!”
