Social media users have started capturing and sharing photos and videos of the #CapeStorm as it hit the Mother City early this afternoon.
Capetonians are set to experience a significant winter storm as heavy rain and strong winds are expected for the rest of the week.
The drought stricken area has been waiting for the winter rains to start and it seems the massive impending storm has made its presence known with high winds, and the Atlantic Ocean was already surging onto land before high tide is meant to hit at 2.30pm today.
Rainfall of 50mm is expected over a 24-hour period on Wednesday, June 7.
Schools, corporates and some retail branches have already started closing as the storm has become visible in many parts of the Western Cape.
The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre said that: “Members of the public are advised that heavy rain can be expected particularly in the Peninsula. In addition extensive gale force winds, very high seas and cold weather conditions including snow on the high-lying areas can be expected.
