When he isn’t healing, he is teaching. Dr Siyabonga Khoza is currently on a mission to unlock the potential of 10,000 learners in disadvantaged communities.
Johannesburg, South Africa (02 August 2026) – Last year, we shared the touching story of a doctor who doesn’t just treat patients; he goes out of his way to tutor and empower school learners in disadvantaged communities.
For Dr Siyabonga Khoza, a typical day means treating patients during his shift, and as soon as he steps off duty, standing before a blackboard to teach extra maths lessons, mostly in rural schools.
This year he set out on a heartfelt mission to visit as many schools as he could in his ongoing efforts to educate, inspire and help young people tap into their potential.
“I’m blessed to have visited 28 different schools in South Africa since the start of 2026,” Siyabonga shares in a recent Facebook post.
He opened up about how the experience and journey have continued to open his eyes to the different realities that exist in the country, particularly the gaps in education, inconsistencies of democracy and how different societies contribute to how young people show up in the world.
“This is my personal mandate: to have social accountability for the country I would love to see by shaping these brilliant minds,” Siyabonga says.
His goal is to visit 50 schools by the end of the year, and while this may be a hard target to reach, Siyabonga is not shifting the goalpost.
“I’m committed to reaching more than 10,000 young people in our country by the year-end and teaching them to believe, dream beyond their circumstances.”
Through his mission, Siyabonga also hopes to share his love for mathematics and medicine with the youngsters – the very passions that have taken him on this personal journey.
With just 73 days until the start of South African National Senior Certificate examinations, Siyabonga is motivated more than ever to keep going and is rooting for all schools, parents, students and teachers to do well and pass with flying colours.
